The Jungle - Part 2

The second half of my Amazon trip I went into the Savannah. We were a group of 5 - Yusof and Karin from Austria and Gert and Karine from Belgium. We took an incredibly fast 2 1/2 hour car ride to the Yucama River and then a 4 hour boat ride to our camp. Within 2 minutes on the river, we saw caiman and capybara and then the list goes on. Wildlife galore!

Sunset on the Amazon savanah

In search of anacondas. But it was a cool, cloudy day. So no luck.

All the wildlife!! It was amazing! What is not pictured are the pink dolphins that are the queens of the river. They push the caiman around and that is why a lot of people swim in the river. unfortunately since it was so cool, I did not take the opportunity to swim with them. They were fairly big but only would surface to breathe. Also I was not able to capture the dozens of macaws, herons, storks and birds flying above. You bird lovers need to come to the Amazon!

Caiman and more caiman. They were everywhere!! At night, there eyes would glow yellow or orange with the reflection of our headlamps. Our guide told us if the eyes were orange that they were in hunting mode.

Turtles in a row. Our guide told us the turtles did this to gain more surface area for the heat from the sun. We all felt bad for the first turtle. Was he cold??

Capybaras: the largest rodents in the world. They lived on the banks of the river.

Squirrel monkeys. We saw them in the trees along the river, in the trees by our lodging.

One afternoon, we went fishing for piranhas. We ended up catching 7 or 8, with our guide catching 6 of them. We also ended up catching catfish by default.

Look at those teeth!

We are actually going to eat these??????

Not so bad after all. It was a white fish with not much meat.
